| Background | The Gamma variant (P.1) of the novel coronavirus was first detected in Brazil and has since been detected in many countries around the world. The S protein of the Brazilian coronavirus variant has two mutations, E484K and N501Y, in addition to several new mutations, such as K417T. Various studies have found that p.1 is significantly less sensitive to neutralizing antibodies, suggesting that this variant may have immune escape from existing vaccines.
