Background | Oncomodulin is a calcium-binding protein and a macrophage-derived growth factor, can promote axon regeneration in retinal ganglion cells, which make it outstanding as most mature CNS pathways, such as oncomodulin glaucoma causes optic nerve damage, do not regenerate after injury. Through unknown mechanisms, however, macrophage activation in the eye stimulates retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) to regenerate long axons beyond the site of optic nerve injury. The oncomodulin protein is identified in some studies as a potent macrophage-derived growth factor for RGCs and other neurons. Oncomodulin antibody, a synthetic peptide corresponding to residues in human Oncomodulin was used as an immunogen. |
