Antibody, also called immunoglobulin, is a protective protein produced by the immune system in response to the presence of a foreign substance called an antigen. Antibodies recognize and latch onto antigens to remove them from the body.
Each antibody has four protein chains: two light and two heavy chains, arranged in a light-heavy-heavy-light structure. The light chains weigh approximately 25 kilodaltons (kDa), and the heavy chains about 50 kDa. Antibodies have a 3D structure, which helps them bind to thousands, even millions, of different antigens with precision. |
Antibodies are disease-fighting proteins in the body that play a crucial role in the immune system. They recognize, mark, and eliminate foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses, alone or with other immune cells. Much like a search battalion, antibodies help the body eliminate them. Produced by your immune system, antibodies bind to these unwanted substances to eradicate them from your system.
There are five classifications of antibodies, based on their structure and where they are found in the body. IgG is the smallest and most abundant antibody in the system, consisting of about 80% of the immunoglobulins. It provides natural passive immunity to the fetus. IgA is the second most abundant antibody, accounting for approximately 10–15% of the trusted source of immunoglobulins. It is commonly present in body secretions such as milk, saliva, sweat, and tears. IgM is the largest antibody by size but makes up only 10% of all immunoglobulins. IgD is less understood compared with other immunoglobulins. It is present in the tissues lining the chest and abdomen. IgE is the least abundant antibody in the system, present in trace amounts in serum. IgE levels rise when the body reacts to pollen, animal dander, and fungus spores.
With the development of biotechnology, high-quality, high-specific antibodies have not only become an effective tool for protein identification and localization but also have been directly used for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
