Background | Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) has only one serotype TWAR. In 1965, a new chlamydia strain named TW-183, was isolated from the conjunctiva specimens of primary school students in Taiwan Province. In 1983, a new chlamydia strain named AR-39 was also isolated from the throat specimens of college students suffering from acute respiratory infection in Seattle, USA. Later, it was found that TW-183 and AR-39 strains were both chlamydia. In 1986, the two strains were combined and named TWAR serotype. |
