CD326 (Gene ID:4072), also known as Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule (EpCAM) or Tumor-Associated Calcium Signal Transducer 1 (TACSTD1), is a cell surface protein encoded by the EpCAM gene. EpCAM was initially discovered in the early 1980s as a cell surface antigen present on epithelial cells. It is a transmembrane glycoprotein that plays a key role in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. EpCAM is involved in intercellular adhesion, tissue morphogenesis, embryonic development, and cancer progression. Gene functions of CD326:
1. Cell adhesion: EpCAM acts as a cell adhesion molecule involved in the establishment and maintenance of intercellular contacts within epithelial tissues. It interacts with other cell adhesion molecules, such as E-calmodulin, to stabilize intercellular junctions.
2. Tissue morphogenesis: During embryonic development, EpCAM is essential for tissue morphogenesis, especially in the intricate assembly of epithelial structures. It contributes to the precise organization and differentiation of epithelial tissue.
3. Stem cell maintenance: EpCAM has been identified as a marker for certain types of stem cells, including intestinal stem cells. It plays a role in maintenance and regulating of stem cell populations, governing their self-renewal and differentiation.
