Proteases are one of the largest families of enzymes encoded by the human genome. By catalyzing the hydrolysis of peptide bonds, enzymatic reactions help to regulate the mechanisms of protein hydrolysis that are central to many physiological and pathological processes such as cell proliferation, embryonic development, tissue remodeling, protein activation and maturation, protein transport and proteolytic metabolism.
