Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a technique that transmits high-energy electrons through electronically transparent samples (~100nm thick). These thin samples interact with the electrons as they pass through. An image is formed as the electrons pass through the sample. Another technique called scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is similar to using an electron beam to image a sample. The difference between STEM and TEM is that the electron beam is focused into a narrow spot and the sample is scanned in a grating. By using either TEM or STEM, high-quality images can be generated with an atomic scale resolution of about 1-2Å. These images are used in cancer research, virology, materials science, and other basic research.
TEM and STEM have better spatial resolution than scanning electron microscopy (SEM). However, it usually requires more complex sample preparation and takes more time than common analytical tools. To provide high-resolution and detailed information on structure and function, all samples should be pristine and approximately 100 nm, and KMD Bioscience provides high-quality and relatively low-cost sample production for routine TEM and STEM.
