CD27 (Gene ID:939), also known as TNFRSF7, is a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily. It is predominantly expressed on the surface of lymphocytes, including T-cells, B-cells, and specific subsets of natural killer (NK) cells. CD27 plays an important role in the regulation of immune responses and lymphocyte activation. The CD27 gene encodes a cell-surface receptor that, when bound to the ligand CD70 (also known as TNFSF7), provides a co-stimulatory signal to lymphocytes. Here are some key functions of CD27:
1. T-cell activation: CD27 is significantly expressed on activated T cells. It interacts with CD70 on antigen-presenting cells (APCs) or other immune cells to provide co-stimulatory signals that enhance T-cell activation, proliferation and effector functions.
2. Memory T cell formation: CD27 is involved in the generation of memory T cells. During the initial immune response, the interaction between CD27 and CD70 contributes to the establishment of durable memory T cells. When re-exposed to the same antigen, these memory T cells play a pivotal role in the rapid immune response.
3. B-cell activation: CD27 is also expressed on B-cells and its interaction with CD70 facilitates B-cell survival, differentiation into plasma cells, and antibody production, which are crucial for the humoral immune response.
4. Anti-tumor immunity: CD27 has attracted attention as a potential target for cancer immunotherapy. Activation of CD27 signaling facilitates the activation of cytotoxic T cells and increases tumor-specific immune responses, thus enhancing anti-tumor immune response.
