FGL1 (Gene ID:2267) has been identified as a liver-specific protein, named for its structural similarity to fibrinogen, a clotting protein. It is produced by hepatocytes in the liver and secreted into the bloodstream. Recent studies have revealed its role in regulating immune responses and cancer. Fibrinogen-like protein 1 (FGL1), belonging to the fibrinogen superfamily. FGL1 is expressed predominantly in the liver and plays a role in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, including liver function and cancer. The main functions of FGL1 are as follows.
1. Immunomodulation: The immunomodulatory function of FGL1 involves its interaction with immune cells, including T cells and dendritic cells, in order to regulate the immune response. FGL1 is thought to contribute to immune tolerance in the liver and may play a role in preventing autoimmune reactions in this organ.
2. Liver function: FGL1 is mainly expressed in the liver and its expression correlates with liver health. It may be involved in liver regeneration and tissue repair processes.
3. Cancer biology: FGL1 has gained attention in the context of cancer. In certain malignancies, such as non-small cell lung cancer, FGL1 is overexpressed and can act as a growth factor for cancer cells. Elevated levels of FGL1 have been correlated with unfavorable prognosis in cancer patients.
4. Therapeutic targets: FGL1 is being explored as a potential therapeutic target in cancer therapy. Strategies aimed at inhibiting the activity of FGL1 or disrupting its interaction with cancer cells are being investigated as potential approaches to impede cancer growth and improving patient prognosis.
