CD48 (Gene ID:962), also known as SLAMF2 (signaling lymphocyte activation molecule family member 2), is a cell surface protein encoded by the CD48 gene. It is a member of the signaling lymphocyte activation molecule (SLAM) family, which plays an important role in immune cell activation and communication. CD48 was initially identified in the early 1990s as a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of T-cells, B-cells, and other immune cells. It was initially named Blast-1, AIM (Adhesion and Activation Molecule), or BCM1 (Blast-1 Cluster Molecule 1). CD48 is involved in a variety of immune processes including lymphocyte activation, adhesion, and immune cell signaling. CD48 functions as a co-stimulatory molecule during the activation of immune cell by interacting with ligands CD2 and CD244 (2B4) present on the surface of other immune cells. This interaction promotes immune cell adhesion, activation, and initiation of the immune response. CD48 plays a role in T cell activation by binding to CD2 on antigen presenting cells (APCs) and other T cells. This interaction provides essential co-stimulatory signals required for T cell proliferation and cytokine production upon antigen recognition.
