Galactose lectin-9 (LGALS9) (Gene ID:3965) is a gene that encodes the protein Galactose lectin-9, a member of the Galectin family known for its specific binding ability. Galactose lectin-9 is involved in a variety of physiological processes, including immune regulation and inflammation. Galactose lectin-9 was initially identified as a protein that binds to beta-galactoside and is expressed in a variety of tissues, including the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. The relationship between Galactose lectin-9 and interaction between Galactose lectin-9 and TIM-3 on T cells leads to inhibition of T cell responses. This interaction induces T cell apoptosis (cell death) and exhaustion, suppresses effector T cell activity, and contributes to immune tolerance. Galactose lectin-9 has anti-inflammatory properties; it inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and promotes the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, which helps to reduce excessive inflammation.
